When you feel good about yourself, good about how you look, dare I
Me on Marco Polo to a friendsay, when you’re having a good hair day, do you not feel like you can take on the world? Are you not more productive? Are you not more joyful and happier and more pleasant to be around? I’m not saying we’re mean when we have bad hair….
This week I had a friend commiserating to me about the cost of the expensive shampoo and conditioner her hairdresser suggested she buy after her last haircut. She loves how the shampoo and conditioner make her hair look and feel, but has been trying to find less expensive ways to achieve similar results, with little success. But she remarked that for the amount she would spend on these products, she could sponsor a child through Compassion.
Like all of us, my friend is on a budget. And sometimes it’s tight. More month that money tight. I’m sure you can relate.
So before I began my pep talk to her, I asked if her budget was currently so tight that she couldn’t spend $38 on these two products, and if she had the wiggle room, I had some thoughts to share with her.
I quickly got a response from her that her budget was especially crazy with some home repairs that needed to happen, but she really wanted to hear what I had to say. After she listened to the Polo I sent her with my ‘pep talk’ she immediately responded that I needed to turn it into a blog post because so many moms feel this way, and need encouragement like I had shared with her. So at her request here’s a pep talk for all of us mamas who are so busy pouring into others that we put ourselves last, and sometimes not even on our list. And that includes me too.
And yes, this is about hair products, but it could easily be about a book you’d really like to buy, that visit to Starbucks you’d love to have with a friend, a bubble bath you’d love to relax in, the Shipt membership you’d love to buy….whatever it is that will make you a little bit happier, but feel it’s an underserved luxury.
I’m not saying we’re mean when we have bad hair, but do you not see the outflow of a good hair day in your life? Which affects your family? Which affects your coworkers? Which affects your productivity? Affects all the things. So what I’m going to challenge you is……
Is it at Ulta? Is it on Amazon? Are there coupons? Can you go on two separate trips so you can use two coupons?
It sounds super superficial to spend that kind of money on hair products, but seriously, aren’t you worth that? If it makes that much of a difference in your hair, which makes that much of a difference in how you feel about yourself, and how you look and how you present yourself to the world. And yes, we can sponsor children around the world and do all the things to help others. And yes, God looks at the inside and not the outside and all those things.
If this was about wanting something outlandishly expensive, that would be a different story.
But. But…
Are you not worth having good hair days consistently and feeling good about yourself?
I hit stop and sent her this ramble from my living room, where I (ironically) sat in my pajamas, with no makeup on and messy hair.
And now I ask you the same think…..
Mama….aren’t you worth it?
Whatever it is…..
Yes, yes you are!
And in case you don’t think you are worth it…let me remind you who thinks you are.
Your family.
Your kids.
Jesus.
He came to give us life and life to the full.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Jesus’ words in John 10:10
If this was about wanting something outlandishly expensive, that would be a different story.
But we’re talking about a good hair day, a soak in a bathtub, a coffee date, a new book and the time to read it, a new pair of shoes. Not a new car, a new house, a pair of Louis Vuitton’s.
You are worth taking a break. Letting the to-do list wait. Picking up pizza instead of making dinner from scratch. Feeling beautiful. Feeling unstoppable.
I think you are more than worth it.
So go do the thing you’ve been putting off. Put it on your calendar if you can’t do it right now. But make it happen this week. No excuses.
You are worth it!
And in the famous words of Donna from Parks and Rec….

I’d love to hear what your favorite treat is for yourself, and when you plan to make it happen! Leave a comment so we all can be inspired by each other’s ways to treat ourselves well.

I am so lucky to have a friend that gives me pep talks!!!
I’m so blessed to have a friend that insists I turn my pep talks into blog posts!
