For years, every night we can, we have all piled into our bed and read stories together. I love how this one part of the day can make a bad day better, and a good one fabulous. There is something special about all of us snuggled up together with someone reading a story to make me feel like we are connected.
When Hubs and I got married we had a queen sized bed. Plenty of room for the 2 of us, but as our family grew, I knew that storytime in bed wasn’t going to work if we didn’t get a bigger bed.
The quest for a new bed included me making sure that Puppy Lover, age 1 1/2 at the time, would be able to climb in himself. I always wanted our boys to know that they are welcome in our bed for storytime.
The middle of the night is a WHOLE different story…no way, no how! This momma will walk you back to your bed and tuck you in (if you’re lucky) but you’re not sleeping in this bed!!!
So king sized, it was, with wide, low side rails and footboard. A lovely Pottery Barn copycat from Value City Furniture (for the record, I highly recommend their wood funiture..their couches..not so much!) And easy for our 2 boys, then 3, then 2 furbabies to climb in themselves.
This is where our boys have heard many stories read. They have worked on their own reading skills. Each time a boy learned to read it was so exciting for him to have a turn reading to the family. There have even (imagine this!;)) been arguments about who would get a turn to read at storytime…what a blessing that they all want to read!
Many stories, and many prayers have been shared in this bed. One of the best parts of motherhood is storytime in this bed. I hope that someday my boys will continue the tradition with their families…in their own bed of course!
And amazingly, and not very attractively, we all still fit in, all 5 of us and 2 dogs. Its quite a hilarious sight some nights as we all squeeze in, with at least one crazy pup climbing all over us giving kisses freely. Those lovable puppies get kicked out when it’s prayer time, though. Too much distraction for a bed full of ADD’ers!
Some seasons of the year (football, and now lacrosse) don’t allow for many storytime nights. And I realize how much I take his blessing for granted. How precious this time together as a family is to my heart, how necessary it is and how I can’t bear the thought of the day there are less than 5 people and 2 furry ones piled in this bed.
My favorite place on earth? My bed, surrounded by my boys.
Where’s your favorite place on earth????
