Here’s 6 things I learned in February.
1.) The Big Boo Cast
I’ve not made it a secret that I wish I were Southern. Not for the heat and humidity..heck no, but for the delightful accent and sayings. The sweet tea wouldn’t be a bad thing either.
Y’all…this here podcast is the jackpot of all Southern accents and sayings.
Sophie and Melanie are both favorite authors of mine, so hearing them chat together is such a hoot. They each are laugh-out-loud funny, so when the two of them get going talking about such trivial things as makeup, shopping for bras, and grocery delivery…you might not get a bit of wisdom from their podcast, but for me, I feel like I’m in the middle of some precious girl-time.
Imagine 2 great friends chatting on the phone (does anyone still do that??) and you pick up on the other line.
That’s the Big Boo Cast.
No more, no less. Just 2 hilarious Southern girlfriends chatting about their lives. They keep me giggling as I listen. It’s been my favorite thing to listen to this month, especially when I’m doing rather mindless tasks like grocery shopping.
Because grocery shopping is way more fun with Southern girlfriends.
2.) I am loving the FOCUS Bible study method
I stumbled upon Katie Orr and her FOCUSed 15 Bible study method when I was listening to the God Centered Mom podcast. I thought it sounded interesting and perhaps a way that I would get more involved in studying the Bible. It was all that and more!!!
I started with the Everyday Love study at the beginning of February and found myself getting so into not only the topic of love, but the technique of using the FOCUSed 15 method!
Last week, I couldn’t believe it that this was what my dining room table looked like when I was doing my study!
I just started on the Everyday Hope study and will do Everyday Faith in 4 weeks when I’m finished everyday Hope.
It is my desire that when I finish these 3 books of study, that I will be able to choose a section of scripture and use the FOCUS method on my own!
3.) I am loving having a show that our whole family can watch together, and enjoy!
Is this the best quality show out there? No. But it is a delight to be able to sit down and enjoy a show as a family that doesn’t have me squirming at the content (too much..it has had a few ‘edgier’ moments that I haven’t loved) and also has me and the Hubs laughing out loud?
It reminds me of TGIF on ABC when I was younger. I always enjoyed watching Full House, Family Matters, and Step by Step with my parents.
The biggest problem I’ve found is rationing the season so we don’t watch them all too quickly!
4.) There’s always room for one more
I read this post years ago by Jen Schmidt at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam and it really spoke to my heart. Cozy is the new grand. Isn’t that awesome!
So when things have come up in our family since then, I’ve tried to say yes to inviting one more…or two more….or…
This thought allowed me to decide to get our dog Toby his own dog ;), Reggie. Toby was horribly lonely last year when the boys went back to school and I went back to work. So we got him a dog for company.
And right now, we’re living this out by having a friend of ours son live with us for a few weeks while his parents are on a mission trip to Africa.
It’s been great to have us stay with him, but there is something stressful about being handed a legal document giving you guardianship over someone else’s kid…especially when he’s old enough to drive and has a car. Especially in the winter. I might have a few more gray hairs, but it’s been a blessing to welcome him into our home like a member of the family.
And I am relishing my new name, Momish. Because right now I’m his mom…..ish.
5.) It’s ok to change your ‘one word’.
The last 2 years I’ve subscribed to the thought of the #OneWord365 movement. It’s a way of getting away from New Year resolutions and instead choosing one word to focus on for the year. Last year, my word was purpose. This year I thought my word was intentional.
But in the last 3 weeks, I really sensed God speaking to my heart about getting away from ‘trying’ so hard. To be a better wife, a better mom, better mentor, better friend, etc., and to instead focus on finding delight. Delight in Him, in life, in moments, in people in my life. I think perhaps He wants to show me that I don’t need to work for His love, but I need to notice it more.
Thanks to the study tools and techniques I’m learning in the FOCUSed 15 study, I am going to do a study of the ways the word ‘delight’ is used in the Bible.
I’m not sure what God has in store for me through this change in focus, but I do know that when He speaks, I need to listen.
I hope to be able to give you updates on what I’m finding to ‘delight’ in.
6.) My boys are my most favorite people to have fun with.
They had mid-winter break this month, and even though I had to work a few of the days, and Hubs was gone a few days on his golf trip, we decided to hit the town and have some fun.
I had bought a Groupon for Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum, super fun place near where I work. After we served dinner to the homeless, we headed that way and stopped my so my big kids could meet my ‘little kids’ that I nanny. They all had a blast..then we were off for some arcade fun!

And a Saturday without anything on the calendar certainly called for a trip to the city! Eastern Market was calling our names! Meat sticks, liver sausage, dog treats, strawberries, fun socks, the best pizza in the world…where else can you find all these things to buy in one place!

And I wanted to stop at one of my other favorite places…The Henry Ford Museum. They were having a rare time of having some of the engines exposed in the cars. It was really cool to see under the hoods!

So…..that’s 6 things I’ve learned in February…..what about you? What did you learn this past month?
